Jack K. Roof wrote on the Washington DC: DC - Washington DC wall: Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) DC Chapter Dinner Meeting and Speaker Presentation September 10, 2015 Thomas "Pete" Petry gave an excellent and informative talk on Electronic Medical Records. Pete started off with a reference to George Carlin's observation/question, "Why do they call it "Practice"? In 2008-2009 fiscal year the enumerated 2.9 million health providers with a new National Provider Identification (NPI). Pete talked about fee-for-service and billing systems using ICD-9 and ICD-10. He gave us a brief but enlightening explanation of epigenetics. Pete told us that data can be structured, unstructured, or semi-structured. He spelled out for us the three Vs in Big Data: Volume, Velocity, and Variability. The new field of automated records will have a huge demand for medical informaticists, as well as data scientists. Storytelling will be a valuable skill. In today's medical world, race and ethnicity are significant variables in risk factors for certain conditions. Stepwise improvements are the nature of the game. Finally, Pete got into CDC vital signs (= "age" of heart); for example, liver and muscle cells are two of the signs for diabetes. He had much more to show from his prepared slides, but perhaps he would honor and entertain us using some of the other information in a future talk. Thanks to Howie Harrell for his report on the presentation.
