Our next meeting will be on April 24, 2014

Topic: LaunchCode - Addressing the talent shortage by removing ‘credential barriers’ to entry for developer jobs

LaunchCode, a St. Louis-based initiative, is a radical approach to addressing the talent shortage by removing ‘credential barriers’ to entry for developer jobs. LaunchCode has partnered with over 100 companies, from 2 person startups to Fortune-500 companies, to offer a new on-ramp to good jobs. LaunchCode has persuaded companies to institute pair programming apprenticeship positions within their company. Programming is particularly well-suited for this because a senior developer, much like a mentor, can teach an inexperienced programmer so much just by showing the amateur his or her thought process in the form of code.

The LaunchCode apprentice is hired by the company at $15/hour for a trial period. The company can fire the candidate at any point, but if the candidate proves capable, the company moves the candidate to a salaried position in a field with a median salary of $81,245. Getting paid to prove themselves de-risks the trial opportunity for the candidate and the trial period allows the company a risk-free opportunity to try a candidate they may not normally hire.

LaunchCode has partnered with, the online educational collaboration between MIT and Harvard, to provide free world-class education to aspiring coders. LaunchCode believes that if students know which courses to take, they can acquire employable skills in a few months. LaunchCode started offering Harvard’s CS50 Introduction to Computer Science I course in downtown St. Louis on January 13 and attracted over 1,000 aspiring coders. LaunchCode expects to have jobs for everyone who can complete this class, and are working to remove barriers to opportunity. The cost to students and job-seekers, $0.

Four months since LaunchCode’s start, the results have been tremendous. 100 companies, including Enterprise, Monsanto, and Express Scripts signed up for LaunchCode in less than one month. In the first three months, 50 new programmers were placed, company satisfaction rate is 100%, and candidate retention rate is 98%. 22 have been salaried, and the remaining developers are still earning $15/hr. as they continue to work and learn.
