    Contest Information

    **Last Updated 3/30/2010**

*AITP NCC 2010 Contest Problem Statements & Suggested Solutions*

The most frequent asked question in the PC Troubleshooting contest is “Does each member of the competing team need a laptop?” The answer is: Yes. However, we will be splitting all the competitors into one of three qualifying sessions on Friday morning. In order to allow you to bring a few less laptops to the conference, we will schedule each team member in a different session. So each member of the team can use the same laptop.

    Graphics Communication Contest

AITP student members can now demonstrate their graphic design talent in addition to the more traditional programming, network, and database options.  The newly designed competition is Graphics Communication.  This contest will test the competitors’ abilities in digital media production by asking them to produce several types of graphic assets as part of a mock ad campaign.  The deliverables include a Design Document, Full Page Print Ad, Online Banner Advertisement, and a Website Mockup.

Students who desire to compete in this contest should have strong skills with digital art software such as (but not limited to) Photoshop, 3D Studio, or Maya.  The contest will allow teams of 1-4 competitors the use of 1-2 computers.  Submissions will be scored on Creativity, Artistry, Consistency, and Completeness.  All assets used by teams to construct their deliverables must be original works produced onsite at the contest.

    Business Intelligence/GIS Contest

    Contest Description
The primary goal of the competition is to utilize geographic information system (GIS) technology and related business analysis skills to address a common business intelligence scenario.  As part of the competition student teams will be presented with a business scenario related to business continuity planning, market campaign planning, site selection, or supply chain logistics analysis. Each team will be asked to leverage a GIS based BI tool and provided data sources to recommend the best course of action based on the facts and questions proposed in the scenario. This is the third year of the competition.  Continuing last year’s arrangements, all students participating in this competition will be required to use the same BI tool to conduct the analysis.

The tool for the competition is the ESRI software Business Analyst Online (BAO).  BAO is a web-based application, which is accessed using an Internet web browser.  Participants do not install this software on their own computers, but rather access it via the Internet.  BAO is a commercially available application with fees charged for it use.  Access to BAO reports is limited by a subscription or using individual report purchases.  This competition provides participants with a unique opportunity to work with this GIS application without these fees.

Each registered BI competition team will be provided a logon access to this software so that reports and maps can be created without incurring these individual usage costs.  This access is limited to only registered contestants, because of the commercial value of BAO.  Hence, your access is provided only from the time of registering for the competition through the completion of competition.  A team must be officially registered for this NCC contest by completing their conference registration and payment using the procedure set forth for NCC registration.  Official registration must be made prior to the start of the NCC.  This requirement of early registration is so that each competing team will have appropriate access to the BAO application prior to the competition and can prepare for the competition.  There will be no onsite registration of new teams who desire to participate in this competition.  Teams of two students will be provided a single access for use by that team.  With teams of two, when one team member has registered, that team member will be provided the single access for their team.  For teams of two, a team member substitution may be made prior to the competition.  This is truly a unique opportunity for you to use the BAO application for GIS analysis!

Important Registration Note:  When registering for this competition, you must provide your individual email address where the BAO access instructions will be sent.  Do not use your advisor’s email.  Do not use a general email for your AITP student chapter.  If your registration uses one of these other email addresses, you may not receive the BAO access information!  This has occurred in prior year competitions.

    BAO Description
Business Analyst Online (BAO), a Web-based solution, combines geographic information system (GIS) technology with extensive business, consumer, and demographic data to deliver more than 100 reports and maps over the Web.  Companies, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations can use Business Analyst Online to profile customers, analyze potential site locations, reveal untapped markets, and conduct targeted marketing campaigns.

With Business Analyst Online, users can customize projects that provide GIS data queries based on rings, donut rings, drive-time polygons, and hand-drawn shapes. Reports and maps of your specific GIS queries are delivered directly to your e-mail as a PDF file or in Excel format.  Users can also add their own customer data and save projects for future use.

Access to the BAO tool is provided without cost to participants by ESRI once a contestant has officially registered for this contest.  Prior to registration, individuals considering participation in this contest can preview the BAO software by using the Guest Access from the BAO Access page at the above URL.  Guest access let’s you explore the various features of BAO, but does not allow you to produce query reports.
