A gift of $20,000 was made recently to Appleton West High School in Appleton, Wisconsin by an Alumni Group of a former class at the school. The idea for this fund came during a class reunion about 4 years ago in order to give back to the school and the current students.
A charitable fund was formed with an advisory committee to raise money from the alumni classmates. John Council, Northeastern Wisconsin Chapter AITP member, and 2013 Association Secretary-Elect, is a member of this advisory committee so this project earned COPA (Chapter Outstanding Performance Award) points for the Chapter in the community service category. The fund is managed with the help of the Appleton Education Foundation which manages other funds and scholarships for Appleton schools.
The group worked with Principal, Greg Hartjes, to determine the school's greatest need. This turned out to be a need for Smart Boards, or Interactive White Boards, for use in the classrooms. They are technology learning aids being used by advanced-thinking schools within the U.S. and throughout the world. However, with educational funding cutbacks occurring recently, many schools do not have the funds to acquire them. Appleton West High School is one of the top 10 academically rated high schools in Wisconsin. It strives to provide the best education possible for students and really wanted this technology to aid in that, but didn't have the funds available for purchasing them.
To the rescue came this fund, which raised the required monies over the past few years. Interactive White Boards were purchased and installed just before the Fall 2012 semester started. The Principal, teachers and students were delighted to get them and very appreciative. There was an article about this on October 20, 2012, in the Appleton Post Crescent newspaper. This article can be viewed on the fund's website at http://www.fund59.org/ as well as other information about the fund.
The Fund Group hopes that this successful effort will help to stimulate other alumni high school or college classes or any other AITP member or Chapter, to do the same thing to benefit the classes that are coming in, with the aid of the latest technology. It is a great investment to help our students!
