I am pleased to announce that Allan Miller is the latest recipient of AITP's Lifetime Individual Performance Award (IPA). The Association Board of Directors (ABoD) approved the Award and Life Membership for Allan Miller at its July Board Meeting.

Allan was Data Processing Manager for Dairyman's Co-Op in Tulare, California when he joined AITP's predecessor DPMA in September 1972. Always one who gets involved in organizations he joins, Allan became a Chapter committee chair in 1973. He served as Chapter Secretary 1974-1976, Chapter President in 1978, 1988 and 1994 through 1998, and Association Director (Chapter Liaison) from 1980 through 1994. Allan also produced monthly publications for the Yosemite Chapter for 15 years.

After the Yosemite Chapter dissolved in 1999, Allan stayed active with AITP as an At-Large member in Region 1. He had been Region 1 Secretary in 1981 and 1982, and Membership Chair in 1988. Allan also served as Region 1 Secretary/Treasurer 1996-1998 and Region 1 Treasurer 1998-2010 -- 20 years of dedicated service to Region 1.

Association President Beth Pirrie calls Allan "a shining gem!" When Allan retired as Region 1 Treasurer in July 2010, Beth thanked him for "the invaluable work done on behalf of AITP/DPMA." In addition to his outstanding dedication to Region 1, she acknowledged all he has done "as ambassador to other groups within AITP such as those within Region 2." Association Executive Vice President Jim Henry calls Allan a "great guy and a great AITP/DPMA historian."

Allan was the glue that held Region 1 together for many years. Sam Luke, Region 2 President and an Association Past President, has enjoyed Allan's friendship for many years. According to Sam, Allan "kept Region 1 alive when it could have died. With little Region 1 activity for a couple of years, Allan was active in Region 2, and we were happy to have him. His dedication, experience, and knowledge will always be beneficial to AITP."

Allan retired from work in 1993, the same year his wife Rita passed away. He traveled to Region 2 for their region meetings for several years so he could stay in touch with all of his DPMA/AITP friends made over the years. Regions 1 and 2 combined cover almost one third of the United States. These two regions may not have as many members as other regions, but they have the largest territory -- from Mexico to Canada and four time zones from Hawai'i to the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains.

When I called Allan to tell him about the honor bestowed upon him by the Association, he had a simple message for all of his DPMA/AITP friends: "Thanks for the memories." Allan promises to stay active, and I know that we can count on him to provide assistance to any chapter that needs help.
