Four Ways to Help Your Chapter Grow and Prosper

Posted by: Norbert J. Kubilus, CCP MBCS -- Region 1 President
AITP members in successful Chapters feel a strong sense of Chapter ownership, as well as a commitment to their profession, community, Region, and Association. Their Chapters provide them with opportunities to enhance technical knowledge, perfect individual skills and develop as leaders in their profession and community. Chapter members share in everyone's accomplishments, offer support and encouragement during career transitions, and give forward to the next generation of business technology professionals.

Maybe your Chapter is already doing this and more, but even the best Chapters -- the COPA (Chapter Outstanding Performance Award), ROCA (Region Outstanding Performance Award) and AOCA (Association Outstanding Performance Award) winners -- strive continuously for ways to grow and improve. That's the core message delivered at the 2010 AITP Members Summit by a panel of leaders from 2008 ROCA winners:

  • Jim Henry -- Anchorage Chapter, Association Executive Vice President/President-Elect
  • Stan Hoffman -- Pittsburgh Chapter, Chapter President ***2008 AOCA Winner***
  • Norbert Kubilus -- San Diego Chapter, Association Director-Western District and Region 1 President
  • Barbara Viola -- Long Island Chapter, Association Director-Eastern District and Chapter President
They discussed how their Chapters engage members as well as attract, motivate and maintain Chapter volunteers and leaders. The take-away from this panel can be summarized in these four ways that you can help your Chapter grow and prosper.

    • Maintain a strong commitment to one another and to your Chapter.
    • Be professional and treat fellow Chapter members with respect.
    • Help build community and deliver value to Chapter members and guests.
    • Support your Chapter members who work hard to plan and deliver programs, activities and events.
    • HAVE FUN!

    • Introduce yourself to people you don't know at Chapter meetings.
    • Welcome new Chapter members and make them feel part of the team.
    • Introduce guests and new members to other Chapter members.
    • Take advantage of networking opportunities.
    • REMEMBER TO SMILE -- it's contagious!

    • Connect your professional colleagues from other organizations with AITP.
    • Invite friends, coworkers and professional associates to join you at Chapter meetings and other activities so they can see the value that AITP has to offer.

    • What's your expertise? ... Every Chapter can benefit from photography, bookkeeping, web development, copy writing, or publicity assistance.
    • Like public speaking? ... Serve on a panel or speak at a Chapter meeting.
    • Friendly and outgoing? ... Be a greeter at Chapter meetings, be part of your Chapter's telephone tree or promote AITP at the networking events of other organizations.
    • Enjoy teaching or training? ... Share your knowledge and expertise by giving a workshop or seminar.
    • Want to give forward? ... Help a Student Chapter, provide guidance to college or high school students, or advise young professionals on how to advance their careers.
    • Have an idea for a program, activity or event? ... All new ideas have value. Your enthusiasm and energy can help others get excited and involved.
    • BECOME A CHAPTER LEADER -- it's rewarding!
Imagine what your Chapter could be in twelve months if every member of your Chapter did one of these things starting this month!

Why are you waiting? You'll be surprised by the results.
