Professionals make the difference...
No matter how sophisticated the technology, it still takes people!

With all the studies about the new IT professional currently being released by research firms such as Robert Half Technology, Gartner, Forrester and TechCareers, you might think that the title of this article was created today.

While I would like to take the credit for such a great tagline, it was actually published four decades ago to the month in the 1968 April issue of the Journal of Data Management, the original publication of DPMA. I did make a few word modifications but none that affected the true still takes people.

Today, the demands placed on our careers include staying abreast of technology changes AND now adding business knowledge to our repertoire to effectively compete in the IT profession. Understanding this convergence of business and technical skills will increase our odds in advancing our careers in the industry as a new IT business professional.

Since 1951, AITP (formerly DPMA) has aspired to be the association of IT professionals. We have provided continuing technical education and certifications. Throughout the many years, AITP has encouraged its members to develop lifelong friendships still takes people.

While several professionals may have ventured off over the years to the hottest technical special interest group or vendor user group, the industry as we know it today, and for the future, has come full circle. The profile of the IT professional now in demand is the business minded individual coupled with technology expertise.

AITP members have a vast amount of expertise and knowledge in both business (real world) and technology. They are the new IT business professional because they have known for all these still takes people.

To continue our aspiration to become the Network of IT Professionals, AITP will need the intellectual power of each and every member to help lead this new IT profession. To further the business education demanded by the industry, we will need to tap into our members for educational and life learning knowledge and still takes people.

I find it humorous that industry research experts are out touting the phrase "body of knowledge" (or BOK) as if it was something new...AITP has been a body of knowledge for over five decades!
