The AITP National Collegiate Conference continues to be the single largest event produced by AITP annually and the 2008 event was yet another success from many angles. The event, held March 27-29, 2008 in Memphis, Tennessee and the legendary Peabody Hotel, the "Grand Hotel of the South", had 673 total attendees which was slightly down from last year's attendance of 731 in Detroit. Over the course of the conference week, we shared the hotel with movie stars, major baseball league legends, and famous music artists (Aretha Franklin) among others in town for the 40th anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King assassination at the National Civil Rights Museum the week after our conference.
Attendees were welcomed to Memphis by our super host committee and crew of area AITP student chapters lead by The University of Mississippi (Ole' Miss) and High-Tech Institute with support from Delta State University and the University of Arkansas at Jonesboro. Conference co-chairs from the University of Mississippi Dr. Tony Ammeter and Dr. Bart Garner did a super job of organizing the troops while tending to speaker introduction honors and coordination of any issues that arose during the conference.
Conference sponsors/exhibitors included returning Diamond Sponsor Robert Half Technology along with Microsoft, State Farm, Wal-Mart and the ICCP. Additional Conference sponsors included the Foundation of Information Technology, Central Michigan University Research Corporation, Blade Systems Alliance, High-Tech Institute, Summerfield and Associates and IT Symbiotics while conference exhibitors USAA, U.S. Steel, Geico, KPMG rounded out our exhibit area. All the exhibitors were impressed with the quality of those attendees visiting with them and many job interviews and offers were made during the conference! The four Purdue University 1st place winners of the Application Development contest, sponsored by Wal-Mart Information Systems Division, were also super pleased to hear about the surprise announcement that they would each receive a $2,500 scholarship!
The conference continues to deliver true value and opportunities to the AITP student & faculty and unique opportunities to hear leading IT organization speakers through keynotes and breakout sessions. The keynote panel moderated by Robert Half Technology Katherine Spencer Lee got the event off to a huge success Friday Morning with tons of tips for obtaining that cool job in the field of IT and was followed by an impressive breakout session speaker line-up including the new "Best Tech-Geek" video contest sponsored by IT Symbiotics that literally had the Friday lunch crowd cheering for more! The conference concluded with yet another super awards banquet wherein we enjoyed a wonderful meal while eagerly awaiting the announcement of the RHT/AITP scholarship winners and the contest winners!
Planning has already started for the 14th annual AITP National Collegiate Conference which will be held in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma April 2-4, 2008 hosted by area Oklahoma City AITP student chapters. Have a Great Summer and see you in Oklahoma City next year!
