Betty Stevens-Frecknall Scholarship Endowment

Betty Stevens-Frecknall began her career in computers as a cardpunch operator in the 1940s . Betty retired at a level of GS14 as manager of a large programmer group responsible for major projects within the HUD information systems infrastructure--all with just a high school education. During these years, Betty was very active in the Washington D.C. Chapter of DPMA (now known as AITP), serving as chapter president in 1972 and also serving as Chapter Liaison for many years. She was committed to developing the chapter and increasing membership, especially among women.

Betty Stevens-Frecknall always talked about the importance of education and that we, as information systems professionals, had an obligation to encourage and support the students that will be the future of our profession. To those that knew Betty, it came as no surprise that when she passed on, a significant portion of her estate was designated to continue her personal involvement in supporting students.

Betty's will provided $165,000 for her Chapter, the Washington DC Chapter, to set up a scholarship fund to assist deserving men and women who are pursuing an education in the field of Information Technology at a university in the United States. The Board of Directors of the Washington DC Chapter asked AITP's Foundation for Information Technology Education (EF) to accept the funds from Betty's estate and establish the Betty Stevens-Frecknall Scholarship Endowment to be administered by the Foundation. As part of that agreement, the chapter is committed to assist the EF by providing member representation to evaluate and award scholarship funds.

Priscilla Lim Harrell has been the chapter's representative on the selection committee of the Foundation of IT Education since 2001. She has done outstanding service on our behalf. Tonight we honor Priscilla for her efforts and hope she will continue working to provide students financial assistance through the Betty Stevens-Frecknall Scholarship Endowment fund. By honoring Priscilla, we also remember Betty for her leadership of the chapter and her legacy of scholarship to support the future members of the information technology profession. The chapter continues to contribute to the Betty Stevens-Frecknall Scholarship endowment fund.

On April 12, 2007, Priscilla was presented with a plaque showing our appreciation for her devoted service to the DC Chapter and the Education Foundation. For more information go to www.edfoundation.org.
