The Student Chapter at Tarleton University held its 20th annual programming contest on February 24 & 25, 2006 in Stephenville, Texas. The contest event was created in honor of Dr. Glenda K. Anderson, an outstanding member of the Tarleton CIS faculty for many years until her untimely death in 1998. Dr. Anderson was the inspiration of many of the innovations at Tarleton for their current curriculum and were achieved through her dedicated efforts and teamwork. Tarleton has continued the tradition of this annual programming contest in her name to honor her memory and legacy of excellence.
AITP Region 3 student chapters competing in the event were: McMurry University from Abilene, Texas and Northwestern State University from Natchitoches, Louisiana. Joining the competition but not eligible for competition prizes were the students from Tarleton State. Tarleton hosts this annual contest to prepare Region 3 student chapters for the National Collegiate Conference which this year will be held in Dallas on March 30 - April 1, 2006.
The Association's Vice President, Teresa Hickerson, who is also the Immediate Past President of Region 3, made the journey to Stephenville from Oklahoma to show national support to the Region 3 students. For further support, Region 3 Vice President Deborah Lovell and Region 3 Secretary Diana Rockel faired the stormy, rainy weather from Dallas to meet the students on Saturday and cheer them on to their next challenge, the 2006 NCC in Dallas. Since the Region 3 Vice President and Secretary are also the President and Secretary, respectively, of the Dallas Chapter, parent chapter to Tarleton, announcements were made to encourage attendance not only to the 2006 NCC but also to the upcoming Region 3 Annual Student Conference being hosted Oct. 19 - 21 in Wichita Falls, Texas at the Midwestern State University campus.
The attendees enjoyed a banquet on Saturday afternoon where Tarleton's Student Chapter President Tyler Kelly presented the awards, and developed a new appreciation of the challenge to pronounce the French monikers of the the Northwestern State students! Recognitions of appreciation were given to Devonna Cowdrey and Robin Wells, faculty advisors at Tarleton for their continued support and dedication to the students. Other faculty in attendance was Jack Russell representing Northwestern State and Richard Brozovic representing McMurry University.
Sponsors and supporters for the event were Starbucks Coffee, Taco Casa, Tarleton Alumni Association, Cotton Patch Café, Bealls, Chili's, Texstar Ford, The Fitness Center, Tarleton CIS Department, WalMart, FMC Technologies, Monograms R Us, AITP Dallas, TSU Dining Services, TSU Police, Tarleton EDP, and Dr. Dennis McCabe.
