(Anchorage, AK) - On Saturday, February 19, 2005, the University of Alaska - Anchorage and Charter College student chapters of AITP participated in a technical Collegiate Competition in database design, network design, web design and PC troubleshooting. Charter College contestants won all four categories. The web design competition challenged participants to develop a Victim Identification website for the Tsunami Disaster. The network design challenge was very close; Charter won by only 0.25 points out of 100. A final competition in Visual Studio programming will be completed on Wednesday, February 23, 2005.
The Competition was held as a prequalification and practice session for entry in AITP's national 10th Annual Collegiate Conference "Ride the Wave of Technology," to be held in Atlanta, Georgia, from April 7 - 9, 2005. Charter College and UAA AITP student chapters will each be sending team members to the Collegiate Conference to compete against contestants from 200 other AITP student chapters.
Competing for UAA were Alexei Kuprienko, Sibongile Lungu, WJ Elliot (Chapter President), Chris Helkenn and Jared Navarre. Charter College's competitors included Shawn Tumey, Greg Morgan (Chapter President), Ubonsak Boutsomsi, Ian Groff, Logan Thornton and Bob Thomas. Dave Fitzgerald, AITP Anchorage Board Member and Professor at UAA, and Stephen King of Charter College organized the competition. Judges included Jeff Bain (GCI), Dave Fitzgerald (UAA), Stephen King (Charter College) Kathleen Voge (UAA) and Minnie Yen (UAA), and Dennis Drinka (UAA).
Both the UAA and Charter College student chapters are currently involved in fundraising to send their team members to the competition. If you or your company would like to donate to their efforts, please contact Caryn Tillman at email@example.com for more information.
