President's Message

Thursday, April 29, 2004   (0 Comments)
Posted by: Sam Luke, 2004 AITP President

As we head toward the end of the first quarter of 2004, I see a lot of work in progress. There have been further adjustments to our conservative budget and to HQ responsibilities, priorities and response time, adjustments to board and committee responsibilities and adjustments to include more volunteers in service to members, chapters, region and association needs. There have also been an added emphasis on meaningful member benefits and revitalization of marketing efforts.

While I am an experienced non-profit executive, I find being president of AITP a much greater challenge than anticipated. Our financial conservatism puts extra burdens on officers, board members, committees and all others who are in service. I applaud and thank all those who, besides giving AITP time and effort, also add assumption of some costs toward reaching their goals.

I wonder aloud why we think our contributions to AITP are worthwhile. For myself, I received gracious technical assistance and management training, and gained life-long and cherished friends from coast to coast. I also gained self-confidence with increasing leadership responsibilities.

In all, I have been there and done that. Looking over my AITP résumé, I could conclude that I have contributed my fair share every year of my AITP membership. Haven't I done enough?

AITP has been my partner in life, like a spouse. We shared good times and bad, assisted each other with personal growth, rewards and challenging times. Now my partner is not doing well. AITP needs me more than ever. Even though I sometimes tire of the extra effort required, AITP deserves my continued patience and compassion. I cannot, will not, should not abandon AITP in its hour of need. AITP is recovering from setbacks and better days have already begun.

In some way or another, I believe your honest appraisal of your own involvement in AITP will reveal similarities to my experiences. I count on your compassion, dedication and loyalty. AITP is recovering and needs your involvement to recover completely. If nothing else, continue your membership and give your leaders some encouragement.

My ears are open should you care to respond.

Thank you and God Bless!
