Executive Director’s Column

It is a great pleasure to join you as your new executive director. AITP has a rich history and a strong future. I've interfaced with the organization over the years as a newspaper editor and business professional.

My background includes several years in newspaper, radio, marketing and marketing research. As a marketing research practitioner, I worked closely with programmers and the IT department. I've also done a bit of programming myself, mostly back in the FORTRAN days. More importantly, what I bring to the table is more than 20 years in association work that includes 15 years in association management. Some of those years were spent managing the ATM Forum. While largely a "recommended standards” body, the organization serves as a networking venue for IT professionals.

Based on my association experience, I have found chapters to be an integral part of the association. They are the grassroots components of the international association which provide the networking opportunities and local information. Communications and strong service relationships between the chapters and the international are essential. We need to jointly set goals and bring them to fruition.

A major focus of my efforts over the next 60 days is to work with your executive committee to hone in on key initiatives and set timelines for completion. This will be in concert with our chapter communications. Further, the information that you provided in recent membership surveys serves a basis for setting these initiatives. We listen and do respond.

Additionally, your staff has been working to enhance operational performance and to ensure a steady flow of information to chapters which, as we can't say enough, are a major part of AITP's foundation. Communications and a steady flow of information to the chapters will be an ongoing effort of headquarter operations.

In addition to mid and long-term objectives, I am now working with your executive committee and board to set priorities that will quickly bear fruit. Among those is continuing to leverage the benefits of your Web portal to provide more information that you can use in your career and business development.

An important priority, as has been noted, is the development and servicing of chapters. Communications is only a part of this. It includes program development at the local level. You'll hear more about this and the dynamics of your organization very shortly.

Your individual voice is important. I want to hear from you. After all, this is your association. Help us make it work for you. And, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or ideas that will help build the future of AITP.
