In Memoriam: Walter "Walt" Harnack

Lifetime member and beloved educator Walt Harnack passed away on July 18, 2011. Walt was an inspirational teacher for 30 years at Akron's Garfield High School as well as a student advisor for the University of Akron. Fellow lifetime member Barbara Shaver met Walt in his latter role and credits him for helping her attain a 4 year degree by capitalizing on her previous coursework. She remembers his mentorship continuing after graduation as he encouraged her to share her thoughts on the importance of education with his high school students whose thank you letters she still cherishes.
A giving person, Walt served his community, his country (Korean conflict), and DPMA (predecessor to AITP) in a variety of positions including chapter President in 1988. An obituary from the Canton Repository listing Walt's many accomplishments follows:
Walter "Walt" Harnack
82, went home to be with the Lord on July 18, 2011 at St. Luke Lutheran Community. Walt was born in Canton, Ohio, on Christmas Day 1928 to the late Taylor and Edith (nee Knight) Harnack. He was a Korean Conflict Army veteran and had a masters degree from the University of Akron. Walt retired as a teacher from Akron Garfield High School with 30 years service; during that time he was also an evening student advisor for the University of Akron. Walt was very active serving his community. He was a 42 year member of Grace United Church of Christ, a member of the Rotary Club of Lake Township, American Legion 435, Executive Mens Club of Stark County, and a Stark County Regional Planning Ride Share consultant. He was a Kentucky Colonel, Paul Harris Fellow, President of DPMA, past Mason, member of AARP, and a life member of NEOTA, OEA and NEA.
He is survived by his loving family, Phyllis (nee Shulenberger) Moore Harnack, his wife of 51 years; children, Patti J. (Michael) O'Hara, Robert Dean Harnack (Linda Casciano), and James Taylor (Melody) Harnack; grandchildren, Angela Dickerhoff, Michael O'Hara II (Carrie), Jaime Madrigal, Tyler (Jordan) DePriest, Audra and Torey DePriest, James Taylor Harnack II; three great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
