Foundation for Information Technology Education (FITE) Elects 2012 Officers and Regents

At their Board of Regents meeting held in conjunction with the ISECON/CONISAR conference the Foundation for Information Technology Education (FITE) elected their 2012 officers and regents.

President: Nita Adams, CISSP, State of Illinois (Retired)

Vice President: Kevin Jetton, CCP, Texas State University

Secretary: Brian Reithel, Ph.D., CCP, University of Mississippi

Treasurer: Mark Gilfand, CCP, State Farm

Regent (Scholarships): Teresa Hickerson, Cameron University

Regent (Programs): Tony LaCrosse, IT Consultant

The Foundation for IT Education is a not-for-profit independent organization representing practitioners, educators and researchers. FITE's mission is the development of individuals in the Information Technology Industry. It seeks to provide leadership in identifying educational opportunities that will advance the information systems profession. FITE was established in 1975 through a generous donations of then DPMA members and was matched by an IT education pioneer who has since passed on….Paul Pair. Gifts and grants to the Foundation are exempt from Federal Income Tax, under section 501 (c) 3, Internal Revenue Code.

The Foundation's objectives are:

  • To provide educational programs and services for information technology professionals, educators, the computer industry, business, government, or the general public.
  • To determine the needs and desires of information technology professionals with regard to professional education and development.
  • To develop and implement educational courses and information technology programs that will meet the needs and desires of information technology professionals.
  • To encourage the information technology profession in the development and adoption of technical and managerial information technology standards and preferred practices.
  • To develop and implement educational programs for information technology personnel self-evaluation.
  • To develop and implement educational programs for the evaluation of hardware, software and managerial systems.
  • To assist educational institutions in the development of effective business information technology curricula.

FITE sponsors the highly successful Information Systems Education Conference (ISECON) and Conference on Information Systems Applied Research (CONISAR) and works very closely with AITP's Special Interest Group for Education (EDSIG) to make this event successful. The Foundation has been an annual sponsor of the AITP National Collegiate Conference (NCC) since 1996.

FITE sponsors a grants and awards program for colleges and universities as well as individuals and organizations, to provide funds for projects that further educate in the areas of information processing. The Foundation also has a IT scholarship program. In some cases the Foundation, through its investment firm, manages the funds for scholarships established and conducted by local AITP chapters. In other cases the Foundation not only managers the funds, but also manages the screening/selection process. Annually, the Selection Committee screens hundreds of applications to identify the worthy recipients of these scholarships.

The Foundation also sponsors the DPMA Legacy Society that recognizes friends of the Foundation who have either funded or planned a deferred gift, such as a bequest or a life income plan. It is named in honor of the Data Processing Management Association (DPMA) which rose to prominence during the pioneering days of the information technology profession and provided many of us with valuable professional growth opportunities, outstanding professional fellowship, and lifelong friendships. One of its newest projects is to help bring DPMA, and AITP members together, similar to the past "DPMA Reunions”. This event is now called the DPMA Legacy Society Jamboree, which is currently being planned for early 2012. More information will be announced shortly as arrangements are finalized.

The Foundation is governed by a volunteer Board of Regents who lend their time, talent and energy to support projects, programs, and initiatives like the ISECON/CONISAR, AITP National Collegiate Conference, Scholarship reviews & selections, and the scholarship fund management.

Grants are welcome from all organizations to expand the Foundation's programs. The gifts and grants exemption from Federal Income Tax also applies to contributions made by AITP chapters, regions, officers, individual members or non-members. Chapter and individual contributions are often placed in the Foundation's endowment fund to insure continuity of the Foundation and to provide maximum leverage for the contribution. Your help is solicited so that the Foundation's much needed and long overdue efforts in information management education can be continued and expanded.
