April is National Volunteer Month, and National Volunteer Week is April 18th through 24th. What better time is there to thank and celebrate all of our members who volunteer at all levels of the Association!

I was pleased to celebrate my 33rd anniversary as an AITP member during the 2012 National Collegiate Conference (NCC) in San Antonio. NCC continues to demonstrate volunteerism in AITP at its best. A cross section of Professional and Student members worked for over a year to insure a highly successful NCC where 775 attendees enjoyed three days of informative and educational sessions, student competitions, team work, and professional networking. It was my pleasure at the Conference Awards Dinner to acknowledge the Faculty Advisors who volunteer untold hours to make our Student Chapters successful and to mentor our Student Members as they prepare to enter the IT profession.

On behalf of the Association Board of Directors, I want to thank our grassroots network of member volunteers who make things happen month after month. Whether you handle the registration table or are a greeter at a chapter meeting, plan a program or obtain speakers for a Region conference, serve on a panel or speak at an AITP event, promote AITP to the local Chamber of Commerce or other professional associations, or publicize AITP activities social media, everything you do for AITP makes a difference. Your volunteerism is the foundation of our Association, and all of your efforts make us stronger.

Do you want to volunteer your time and talents but don't know how? Talk to one of your Chapter officers or directors. They know where there's the most need locally. Or you can send an email to our Association Secretary and Volunteer Chair, Barbara Viola, at

Does your Chapter have something special planned for National Volunteer Week? Let Barbara or me know, and we'll help spread the word!

I have one final thought to share for observing National Volunteer Week. Earth Day (April 22nd) falls in the middle of the week. Our environment continues to suffer in part from improper disposal of electronic equipment. AITP adopted a formal set of Standards of Responsibility for Handling Electronic Waste (eWaste) four years ago, which can be found at Recycling and reusing obsolete electronic equipment are the preferred methods for handling eWaste; tossing eWaste into the trash isn't a viable option. As a National Volunteer Week activity, I ask all members to become familiar with this document and help promote these Standards.

Again, I extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of our volunteers and volunteer leaders. Sharing your time and talent is very much appreciated by us all.
