Running Out of Words for Storage?

I ran across an interesting article on the NBC news website about the lack of words to describe data storage. A lot of us remember the days of kilobytes and megabytes. Not too long ago a gigabyte was a tremendous amount of storage. I remember seeing an early 2 GB hard drive that cost $2500. Now 2 GB is a giveaway flash drive at a vendors table. The NBC News article, which was written by Devin Coldewey, states that terabytes of storage are now common place for personal use.

At this time Facebook and Google have hundreds of petabytes of storage. When you throw in YouTube, Apple, Flickr and others involved in Big Data, exabytes are coming into play. After exabytes comes zettabytes and then yottabytes and then......well nothing. A new number would have to be determined by the General Conference of Weights and Measures.
