Mr. Peter Kwang Ying Schichtel, a graduating senior from Columbine High School, was honored by the Mile High Chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) as the 2011 recipient of the Dave Sanders Columbine Information Technology Scholarship. The award was presented at the chapter's monthly dinner meeting which was held on May 19th, 2011. Peter will use the $1000 scholarship for tuition to attend the University of Denver in the fall where he intends to major in engineering.

In his classes at Columbine Peter has earned a 3.9 GPA and has been named a Pioneer Scholar by the University of Denver in recognition of his stellar academic record and past achievements.

Peter's honors include the National Honor society, CHSSA Athletic Academic Award, Varsity Soccer Starter for 2008 to 2010, Captain of the Varsity Soccer Team 2009 to 2010, First Team All Conference in Soccer - Jefferson County and Junior Graduation Escort in 2010.

Being civic minded Peter has been active in the Cub Scouts and has served as a volunteer for Rush Thunder Soccer, Columbine Community Day, Trick or Treat Street, Run for Remembrance, Emily's Parade, Vacation Bible School, South Evangelical Presbyterian Fellowship and Young Life Student Leader.

Scholarship Committee Chair, Larry Krupicka, says that Peter was highly recommended by his guidance counselor Ms. Lee Paternoster and his teacher and coach Brian Todd who noted: "I firmly believe Peter is someone who is more than ready to succeed in any post-secondary environment based on his work ethic, citizenship, organizational skill and maturity in working cooperatively with others."

Outside the classroom Peter enjoys spending his time playing soccer and basketball.

This scholarship was funded to honor the memory of Dave Sanders, who was a computer lab and business instructor at Columbine High School in Littleton Colorado until April 20, 1999 when he lost his life while helping students to safety during the Columbine shootings.
