The first weeks of 2011 have been very busy in AITP's Region 5 (the Pacesetter Region). Here's a recap.

Spring 2011 Region 5 Conference
 

Registration is now open for the Spring 2011 Region 5 Conference, Thursday May 12 and Friday May 13, 2011, at the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel and Conference Center, Springfield, Illinois. The conference, hosted by the Capitol Chapter, promises to be a tremendous educational opportunity for IT professionals from all disciplines.

The base registration cost of only $30 for students, $40 for members and $50 for non-members includes:

  • Choice of twelve different educational sessions Thursday morning and afternoon
  • Additional educational sessions on Friday morning
  • Region 5 Board Meeting and Leadership Workshop Friday morning
  • Technology Expo all day on Thursday (vendor booths, product demonstrations, etc.)
  • Continental breakfast and dinner with keynote speaker
Conference hotel room rates are $70 Single, $85 Double, $100 Triple, $115 Quadruple.

Fall 2011 Region 5 Conference
The Northeastern Wisconsin Chapter will host the Fall 2011 Region 5 Conference Wednesday October 19 and Thursday October 20, 2011 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center, Green Bay, Wisconsin. Mark your calendars!


Region 5 NCC Grant Recipients Announced
 
Each year, Region 5 awards grants to several student chapters to help them attend the National Collegiate Conference (NCC). This year's grant recipients, in no particular order, are:

- Fox Valley Technical College
- Eastern Illinois University
- University of Southern Indiana
- University of Wisconsin-Whitewater

Twin City Named 2010 Region 5 Outstanding Professional Chapter
 
For the second year in a row, the Twin City Chapter in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois was awarded the Region 5 Region Outstanding Chapter Award (ROCA).

"Twin Cities, again in 2010, continued to function at an extremely high level of internal AITP activity as well as numerous 'Give Back/Pay Forward' activities involving the business community, community in general and the educational institutions in their area (as well as being well represented , not only in attendance, but in working at Region and Association events)", said Region 5 President Larry Schmitz. "They are truly deserving of this recognition." Congratulations to 2010 Twin City Chapter President Beverly Stevens and the entire chapter for their achievement.

The Twin City Chapter now joins the ROCA winners from other Regions. One of them will be given the Association Outstanding Chapter Award (AOCA) at the AITP Member Summit March 25-26, 2011 in Orlando, Florida.


East Central Indiana's Gary Kern Named a Computerworld Premier IT Leader
 
AITP East Central Indiana Past President Gary Kern was named one of Computerworld's Premier 100 IT Leaders for 2011, which honors the brightest talent in the IT Industry. Those people nominated to the list have demonstrated leadership qualities throughout their careers.

Computerworld's Premier 100 IT Leaders are "individuals who foster ideas and creative work environments, envision innovative technology approaches to business problems and effectively manage IT strategies". As noted in Computerworld, "Even through economic turmoil that for many meant budget cuts and staff downsizing, these 100 men and women continued to deliver innovative projects and measurable business value." Gary is CIO of Mutual Bank in Muncie, Indiana and one of the founders of the East Central Indiana AITP chapter. AITP Region 5 congratulates Gary on this great honor.


Region 5 Congratulates Outstanding Professional Chapters for 2010
 
AITP recently announced the recipients of Chapter Outstanding Performance Award (COPA) for the 2010 calendar year.

- Southeast Wisconsin
- St. Louis
- Twin City



Eastern Illinois University is Region 5 Student Chapter of the Year
 
Region 5 is proud to announce that Eastern Illinois University is the 2009-2010 Region 5 Student Chapter of the Year.

Eastern Illinois was involved in a number of activities at the local, regional and association level. Some of these activities include:
  • Members gave presentations at their school and local area.
  • Several member gave presentations to the own chapter.
  • Members even travelled to another student chapter (several hours away) to give a presentation.
  • They participated in a panel discussion at a major employer, several hours away from the chapter.
  • Members attended non-AITP industry conferences.
  • The chapter got local newspaper coverage of events.
  • They utilized their web site and kept information well up to date.
  • Chapter members authored two AITP Information Executive articles.
  • They had excellent turnout at chapter events.
  • Eastern Illinois University was very well represented at the 2010 NCC.
  • The chapter president and faculty advisor presented at a Region 5 leadership workshop.
  • The chapter authored a presentation on Building a Student Chapter, that is on the AITP Promotion Page for use by all AITP student chapters.
Region 5 congratulates Eastern Illinois University, 2010 Student Chapter President Elias Sahyouni and Faculty Advisor Vicki Hampton on a job very well done! Eastern Illinois University is sponsored by the Capitol Chapter.

Region 5 thanks the selection committee of Vicky Harbour, Dick Boenisch, and Mark Gilfand. The committee was fortunate to have six excellent student chapters to pick from, who last fall earned the Student Chapter Outstanding Performance Award:

- Eastern Illinois University

- Southwestern Illinois College
- University of Wisconsin-Whitewater
