AITP 2009-2011 Strategic Plan - Goals for AITP Announced

Strategic planning is important for any organization in order to choose a direction for the future, to guide program development and provide a blueprint for the appropriate allocation of resources.

A strong strategic plan with a major focus on repositioning will guide AITP to achieve success and discover new ways to move our association into a more prosperous future. The main goal of strategic repositioning is to redefine our purpose in order to become more viable and stay competitive.

The IT industry moves so rapidly now that we must be positioned to be able to move quickly with any new opportunities and initiatives. It is important to incorporate nimbleness into our thinking. With the ability to both maintain focus and drive, not just react, to changing conditions, we will essentially be able to become a more agile and global AITP of the future.

In February, 2008, the Strategic Planning Committee began a process for planning the strategic direction of the association. In November, 2008, the Board of Directors affirmed a desire to pursue this new strategic focus for the organization - namely that of professional development to meet the needs of the new IT profession. Specifically, the goal is to provide business acumen and leadership/professional soft skills training and programs for our members to advance their careers.

The Strategic Planning Committee reviewed and gathered data to validate the new direction. The industry trends show that technical skills are not enough. The IT professional must possess leadership and management soft skills as well as business knowledge to advance their careers in the new technology organizations.

Our existing vision and mission statements were reviewed and revised to meet the strategic goals. In addition, the Strategic Planning Committee recommended the association define its core values. These were presented to the Board of the Association and affirmed.

The Board of Directors approved the following new vision statement, mission statement and core values that align with the strategies of positioning AITP as the leader of personal development for the IT professional:

Vision Statement
AITP is the leading worldwide society of information technology business professionals and the community of knowledge for the current and next generation of leaders.

Mission Statement
To serve our members by delivering relevant technology and leadership education, research and information on current business and technology issues, and forums for networking and collaboration.

Core Values
Service. We keep current in technology, business and academia. We contribute to the Association, IT profession and society utilizing leadership, appropriate solutions and sound processes.

Integrity. We value professionalism and uphold the AITP Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct.

Respect. We build an inclusive environment through mentoring, delivering on commitments, working together with trust, and enjoying the camaraderie of each other.

Innovation. We learn, share insights, and encourage our members to make a difference today and in the future.

Planning Our Future

To effectively define AITP in the marketplace, we will deliver the needs of the integrated leader of business and technology.

The Board of Directors approved four major goals, and some strategies related to each. Additionally, strategic principles to guide decision making were developed. Focusing on our strategic goals in our planning process helped us explore new services, markets and other opportunities which were previously not evident.

2009-2011 Strategic Goals

  • Consistently achieve membership growth
  • Provide training and professional development for our members
  • Build relationships with strategic partners
  • Become agile, improve efficiencies, and practice effective leadership

The structure of our strategic plan includes several critical elements:

  1. Tactical and Action Plans. We are developing logical tactical and action plans from our Strategic Plan. Our assigned Task Force Groups will deliver the plans and work with committees to ensure the plans we are investing in get carried out with on time delivery.
  2. Performance Measures. To review progress toward meeting our goals, performance measurements will be used to ensure an effective review process. This will provide for immediate corrective action if delays arise.
  3. Communication. By sharing the 2009-2011 Strategic Plan with our membership and involving our volunteers in developing and executing the tactical and action plans, we will have aligned an acceptance of change within in the entire organization.
  4. Team Effort. We have recruited, and will continue to recruit, individual volunteers from all levels of our organization to create a truly cross-functional team. This broad participation helps the entire association understand our strategic direction and embrace our Strategic Plan.
  5. Leadership. Responsibility has been built into the plan and the Association leaders encourage team participation, a must for our success.

Our organization has recognized the need for change and by properly implementing our 2009-2011 Strategic Plan, is prepared for the changing marketplace and the opportunity to grow our membership in new and profitable ways.
