AITP and Robert Half Technology announced that Michael Armstrong, assistant city manager and chief information officer for the city of Des Moines, Iowa, is the recipient of the 2004 Distinguished Information Sciences Award (DISA). Armstrong was chosen from nominations submitted throughout the country for IT professionals who have made outstanding contributions to advancing the field of technology.

During his seven-year tenure with the city of Des Moines, Armstrong has shaped the strategic role that IT plays in the successful operation of a city government. He is recognized for his progressive and broad-minded approach to educating others about the significance IT should take in the organizational decision-making process.

"We commend Michael for his dedication to the profession, forward-thinking leadership and commitment to education," said Sam Luke, AITP president. "He is deeply concerned with helping others learn from his experiences as well as identifying the next generation of technology leaders."

Katherine Spencer Lee, executive director of Robert Half Technology, added, "The Distinguished Information Sciences Award is designed to reward leadership, achievement and ethical practices within the industry. As proud sponsors of the award, we congratulate Michael and all of the nominees for their achievements."

Representatives from AITP and Robert Half Technology presented Armstrong with his award at AITP's national conference in Providence, R.I., on November 5. He also received a complimentary lifetime membership to AITP.

The DISA recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions through distinguished services in the field of IT. The award was introduced in 1969 when its first recipient was Rear Admiral Grace M. Hopper. Since then, the DISA list of winners includes IT luminaries such as Dr. Paul M. Pair, H. Ross Perot, Bill Gates and Lt. General Emmett Paige Jr.
