The Akron Canton chapter lost its last charter member on November 2, 2011 with the passing of Vern Reed. An accountant at Goodyear Tire & Rubber, Vern found his interests mirrored in the newly formed National Machine Accountants Association (predecessor to DPMA and AITP) which he joined in 1956. A mere six years later, he was elected chapter president. Working his way up the organizational ranks, Vern eventually became an International Director and in 1986 was awarded lifetime Emeritus membership for his many years of service.
A WW II verteran, Vern is remembered for his military bearing and his intrepid spirit - qualities that no doubt factored into his achieving the rank of Master Sergeant for his service in the Pacific and European theaters. Fellow International Director Russ Moore remembers encountering Vern at a skydiving demonstration at the local airport. Confessing his own cowardice, Russ found his sentiments at odds with Vern's. It turned out that Vern's son was one of the jumpers and, Russ suspects, could have easily convinced his dad to enthusiastically join him in the activity.
An important part of the Reed family legacy, DPMA (now AITP) was also the organization of choice for Vern's brother, Melvin, who predeceased him. Vern's lifetime involvement in DPMA is prominantly noted in the following obituary from the November 3, 2011 Akron Beacon Journal. Vern Reed
