The AITP "Going the Extra Mile” Award is in recognition of faculty members that truly go "the extra mile” for their AITP student chapter. Candidates do not have to be the official faculty advisor for the AITP student chapter.

This year's AITP "Going the Extra Mile” Award goes to Diane Murphey, Oklahoma Panhandle State Universityand Dr. Lissa Pollacia, Georgia Gwinnett College.

The traits of the "ideal candidate” is one who:

  • Gives of their time and energy in an unselfish manner to the AITP student chapter throughout the year
  • Keeps the AITP student chapter focused
  • Ensures successful AITP student chapter events and activities
  • Bends over backwards to train, support and mentor chapter officers, committee chairs and members
  • Helps coordinate chapter trips, events and activities and basically "makes things happen when it looks like they will not happen”

This year winners both show the characteristics.

The nomination from one student said, "the instructor continues to impress me on a daily basis, as I'm now taking an advanced database class with her, and there hasn't been a moment when I regretted coming to this school. This instructor is the definition of a professor who goes the extra mile. She didn't even have to give me a recommendation for my job, but she did all this without so much as a blink of an eye. Everything this instructor does is to help her students grow to become professional people in the IT world, and I'm thankful for having that guidance every day. It appears all the instructor wants out of life is a good life for each of the students. The dedication to the students in our department is something to be admired – and certainly something that needs to be recognized.”

"Each year, our nominee goes above and beyond the call of duty to see students' succeed in academics and in life. During a semester our nominee is continuously helping anyone and everyone who walks into her office the best they can. This helpfulness ranges from homework all the way to finding a job. Our nominee puts us in situations that enable us to prove ourselves to our maximum as well as constantly encouraging us to succeed. Also is constantly keeping in touch with graduates and former AITP members in order to find out what new programs need to be added to our degree of learning so once we are out in the world we are prepared for everything. Without our nominee, there would be no AITP at our University, the backbone to our department as well as our ability to attend such prestigious events associated with AITP. Thanks to her we get an opportunity to show other people what we have learned from this amazing Professor/Advisor/Friend and what she has taught us through our college career.”

A quote from the second winner nominee said, "I recently joined our AITP student chapter. Since then, I have been repeatedly impressed by her dedication and enthusiasm for supporting our AITP Student Chapter. Many times, I've thought of this instructor as a key supporter but also a 'silent hand' behind our young, successful chapter. I've observed her advocating for the chapter in many ways, including: recruiting faculty support, guiding the student leadership, promoting the chapter, introducing students and faculty to our local AITP leadership, and connecting students with potential employers. This instructor has been a primary reason for increased AITP student membership and a key driver for our student chapter's participation in NCC.”

"Although my primary interaction with her has been through our AITP chapter, I've also encountered the same dedication in other college areas as well. It is my firm belief that she does 'go the extra mile' as a standard practice. Unequivocally, she makes a significant impact on both our students and our profession through her tireless efforts.”
