AITP lost a great friend and supporter when William Frank Howell, 86, passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2012.

Association Director Brad Moses tells us:
I had the fortunate opportunity to know Bill Howell. He was a gentle, caring, proud and active member of the National Machine Accountants Association, DPMA and AITP. He was very proud that he had attended every National Annual Meeting since he had joined, except for the last few years. He was a true professional.

Bill Howell's daughter, Catherine, told AITP:
I am one of William Howell's four daughters. He attended meetings of the Raleigh chapter after retiring to North Carolina in 1996. I am writing to inform you of his passing on April 18th. He fell ill in August of last year just days after driving himself to the AITP meeting. He was 86.

Dad was incredibly proud of his association and service in AITP. He was a member of the DPMA which predated AITP from its inception in the early 1950's. He served in the Empire and Garden State chapters in various executive positions over the years. He always wore his DPMA or AITP lapel pins and he was buried wearing an anniversary pin.

Dad was also a veteran of the Army Air Corps, 8th Air Force, 487th Bomb Group (WW II) and served as a ball turret gunner for 24 missions in Europe. Although somewhat reticent about his military service, he loved to discuss his history with the DPMA and AITP.

Association President Norbert Kubilus tells us:
When I was a member of the Lakeland Chapter in the 70s and 80s, I got to know him through region events and joint chapter meetings with the Garden State Chapter. His 60 years as a NMAA/DPMA/AITP member, volunteer and leader contributed to the lives and professional growth of thousands who today are part of his legacy. At 60 years, Bill held the record for the longest continuous membership in Association history.

From the Raleigh News and Observer:
He was born February 16, 1926 in Bronx, NY to the late Arthur E. Howell and Julia DeFeo Howell.

Mr. Howell was a veteran of World War II attaining the rank of S/Sgt in the Army Air Corps. He served as a ball turret gunner on a B-17 crew for 24 missions in the 487th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. He was credentialed as a Certified Data Processor, managing computer installations and applications for several firms in greater New York, most recently for Putnam-Berkeley publishing. He was instrumental in the growth of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (formerly DPMA). An active member for over 50 years, he held regional, national, and international offices. Formerly a resident of Hawthorne, NJ where he was a member of St. Anthony RC Church, he retired to Durham in 1996 with his late wife, Eileen and joined Holy Infant parish.

He is survived by four daughters, Susan Brunssen and husband, Fritz of Durham; Diane O'Reilly of Torrington, CT; Catherine Howell and partner, Hannah Buzby of Bradford, MA; Eileen Banka of Mt. Laurel, NJ; grandchildren, Katrina Morris and husband, Sammy, Regina Brunssen, Terrance and Meghan O'Reilly; great-grandchildren, Carly Burnette, Alana Morris, and Annelena Brunssen.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the NC Children's Hospital, www.ncchildrenspromise.org or Catholic Charities, 902 Broad Street, Durham, NC 27705.
