Greater Wheeling Chapter Hears How Technology Helps Local Police

At their January Meeting, the Greater Wheeling Chapter learned how the Bethesda, Ohio Police department uses technology with their "Sexual Predator Internet Initiative Task Force”.

A police officer logs on as an underage decoy and waits while invitations to chat pop up all over the screen. The officer begins conversing with a couple of the names, but doesn't initiate any sexual discussion. The predator becomes more explicit with sex chat and many times offers to send materials to the child. The police are saving and backing up all chat sessions.

When the predator sends explicit information to the decoy, he has crossed the line, and police create his evidence file. Using tracking software and contacting his internet service provider, police are able to find out the perpetrator's name, address, police records and any other pertinent information. They send this file to the county prosecuting attorney's office. Bethesda Police Chief Jeremy Campbell says an investigation can take anywhere from two days to two months from the time of initial contact.

The proximity of the lab and the elimination of delays in processing evidence are boons to the prosecutors' offices. In Belmont County, Prosecuting Attorney Chris Berhalter finds that most of his cases are using this lab exclusively now that it's up and running. The ability to keep the evidence and investigation within the county and talk with the officers collecting and processing the evidence cuts hours — even days — from the investigation and prosecution. His office is able to write warrants and get the offenders off the street and off the computer. He translates that into protecting more children.

Akron Canton Chapter Hosts International IaaS Webinar

Things don't always work out as planned. Occasionally they work out better. The Akron Canton Chapter "beat the plan” as we hosted our first international meeting on December 18, 2012. Here's how we found ourselves on the international stage.

Faced with the fickleness of northern Ohio weather, which threw rain, snow, and sleet on our winter meeting nights, the Akron Canton chapter decided to abandon face-to-face meetings from November through February. We redirected our energy into researching the possibility of holding webinars that would allow our members and local IT professionals to attend a meeting without "mushing through the snow.”

Working with our Microsoft IT Pro, Keith Mayer, we designed a unique webinar on using Azure to implement an IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) solution. The webinar was presented using Microsoft's Lync conferencing client, and featured a hands-on element in which attendees could use a free trial of Azure to follow along as Keith demonstrated the steps for creating virtual servers in the cloud.

As usual, we advertised the event in several LinkedIn groups and on Facebook. Within a week of posting, the webinar had 26 registrants. We were very pleased with that result as our average attendance is around 25. However, the good news continued. By the date of the webinar we had 69 registrants, and were amazed to discover that 17 of them were from outside the US! Other countries represented included: Canada (2), United Kingdom (3), India (2), Russia (1), New Zealand (1), Ukraine (1), Hungary (1), Brazil (1), Argentina (3), and Venezuela (2).
As 21st Century technology professionals, we need to creatively leverage all of the wonderful new technologies we have at our disposal. As AITP leaders, we should utilize the many resources available to us within the organization. The Akron Canton Chapter did that and, by so doing, has opened the door to attendees beyond our normal service area. Encouraged by our success, we are planning a second webinar for mid-February.

Technology Gift to High School Earns Northeastern Wisconsin Chapter COPA Points

A gift of $20,000 was made recently to Appleton West High School in Appleton, Wisconsin by an Alumni Group of a former class at the school. The idea for this fund came during a class reunion about 4 years ago in order to give back to the school and the current students.

A charitable fund was formed with an advisory committee to raise money from the alumni classmates. John Council, Northeastern Wisconsin Chapter AITP member, and 2013 Association Secretary-Elect, is a member of this advisory committee so this project earned COPA (Chapter Outstanding Performance Award) points for the Chapter in the community service category. The fund is managed with the help of the Appleton Education Foundation which manages other funds and scholarships for Appleton schools.

The group worked with Principal, Greg Hartjes, to determine the school's greatest need. This turned out to be a need for Smart Boards, or Interactive White Boards, for use in the classrooms. They are technology learning aids being used by advanced-thinking schools within the U.S. and throughout the world. However, with educational funding cutbacks occurring recently, many schools do not have the funds to acquire them. Appleton West High School is one of the top 10 academically rated high schools in Wisconsin. It strives to provide the best education possible for students and really wanted this technology to aid in that, but didn't have the funds available for purchasing them.

To the rescue came this fund, which raised the required monies over the past few years. Interactive White Boards were purchased and installed just before the Fall 2012 semester started. The Principal, teachers and students were delighted to get them and very appreciative. There was an article about this on October 20, 2012, in the Appleton Post Crescent newspaper. This article can be viewed on the fund's website at http://www.fund59.org/ as well as other information about the fund.

The Fund Group hopes that this successful effort will help to stimulate other alumni high school or college classes or any other AITP member or Chapter, to do the same thing to benefit the classes that are coming in, with the aid of the latest technology. It is a great investment to help our students!

It was an excellent meeting and a good opportunity for the young and not-so-young to discuss the history and current state of IT. We thank our keynote speaker, Mr. Ken Shelby, the IT Partner handling CIO responsibilities for the Surveillance and Navigation Systems Line of Business at Lockheed Martin's Space Systems Company, for an excellent presentation on Retiree Knowledge Capture and Consumption Optimization. We learned techniques for dealing with loss of institutional memory and "know how” when retirees leave the company. We were fortunate to be able to preview his presentation prior to his giving it to an international conference in Italy - his last step before being granted his doctorate. We offer our sincere congratulations to Dr. Shelby!

He cautioned system planners and implementers to make their decisions carefully, weighing the cost of the cloud vs. the cost of maintaining one's own infrastructure. He advised that we assess the economics of data management by placing a value on data. To determine the value of data, it is essential that we collaborate with the business people, using their language. Remember that the data belongs to the organization and not to the service provider. Be clear on what would happen if you change your mind and want to move your data back into your own infrastructure -- how would it be done and what would it cost? The bottom line is that it's your data and you are accountable.

Bob Hunt brought more than 19 years of IT industry experience. He emphasized that cloud computing is not a "one size fits all” solution. Microsoft's cloud computing strategy and solution, as released under Windows Azure platform, is more cost-effective than other offerings in the market and offers the customer more flexibility of choice:

Infrastructure as a service – Microsoft provides machines, storage, firewalls, and networks on demand from resources installed in their data centers. Customers are responsible for maintaining the operating system and application software.

Platform as a service (client application on the cloud) – Microsoft provides an operating system, programming language execution environment, database and servers. IT developers can develop the software using tools and libraries from the provider and run their solutions on the cloud without the cost and complexity of buying and managing the hardware and software. The consumer also controls software deployment and configuration settings.

Software as a service (IT has no control) – Microsoft would install and operate application software in the cloud and the customer would access the software from the cloud clients. IT has no control of the cloud infrastructure and platform on which the application is running. The customer does not need to install and run the application on the company's computers, minimizing maintenance and support.

Scott Bradley, with over 25 years of IT management experience, delivered the denouement of the meeting. He declared that, while other technologists might attempt to make predictions, he would not do so. His company, BNL, is so far advanced that they are already doing what others would predict. Then he proved it to be so.

He talked about the bleeding edge IT systems and services that are required by the scientific research community. He gave an overview of BNL's awesome 5,625-acre campus, including:

The $1 billion, ½-mile circumference National Synchrotron Light Source II facility, for researching the nature of light.

The Interdisciplinary Science Building and a 5-story microscope (2 stories above ground and 3 "vibration-proof” stories below ground).

70 gigabytes per second WAN connection.

LAN providing a minimum of 1 gigabytes per second to every desktop.

Start-up of the Large Hadron Collider:

One of the largest and truly global scientific projects ever, a turning point in particle physics, for exploration of a new energy frontier in proton-proton and heavy ion collisions.

World-wide collaboration – 8000 users at 450 institutions around the world – unites computing resources for particle physicists, requiring global n/w connectivity at highest possible bandwidth.

ATLAS Detector – 150 feet long, 40 feet radius, 7000 tons.

LHC Optical Private Network (LHCOPN).

Data transfer 1 petabyte per day – available at all sites after 4 hours.

And so it was!

After the question and answer session, the excitement had peaked and the entire group adjourned back to the 2nd floor for more beverages and for raffle prizes donated by our sponsors, Blue Wolf, eScope Solutions and Microsoft. Following the fun and more networking, The Sexy Salad caterers served a delectable lunch on the first floor.

With a meal behind us and an intense storm approaching, we networked on both floors as the Lauren Kristy sped back across the white caps to return to the Bay Shore Marina.

It was, indeed, another successful boat ride for AITP-LI!

Pittsburgh Chapters "Holds On" to Celebrate 60 Years

The AITP Pittsburgh Chapter is celebrating 60 years! And that milestone received the attention of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

The article recaps what "Data Processing” was like when the chapter started in 1952 and describes the current state of the industry in the Pittsburgh area. It notes that the Pittsburgh Chapter membership peaked in the 1970s and 1980s. Membership has since dropped. The chapter even briefly discussed suspending operations. But the chapter leadership, headed by President Stan Hoffman, was dedicated to keep it going to provide educational opportunities for its members and others interested in technology. And their work paid off. Pittsburgh was named the Association Outstanding Chapter in 2008.

The article recaps the Pittsburgh chapter's mentorship for other chapters in Region 18, including its efforts to start the Johnstown chapter several years ago.

This Wednesday, the chapter will celebrate their accomplishments at their 60th anniversary event.

Richmond AITP Chapter Launches New Website

The Richmond chapter of the Association for IT Professionals (AITP) recently launched a new website that was designed and developed pro-bono by a team of Celerity employees. See http://www.aitprich.org/.

According to Kimion Walker, VP of Marketing for Richmond AITP, the site is a great improvement over their previous version. Key enhancements include the ability to view the site from any mobile device; access to multiple social media channels; and improved functionality, usability and design.

Richmond AITP Chapter President Derek Brooks adds that "We are fortunate to have a very rich and engaged IT community in the Richmond Metro Area and a talented and engaged board of directors. As a result, AITP Richmond has seen meeting attendance double in the last year. Collaborative efforts with companies like Celerity and Sandhills, who poll their IT publications and provide articles related to our monthly meeting topics, make this possible.”

The Celerity web team included Heather Renwick (designer/developer), Lam Nguyen (front end developer), and Patrick vanLandingham (project manager/account executive). The Celerity-AITP team collaborated closely over a period of six months to define the user and business requirements, design mockups and templates, and create a content structure that met the needs of the audience.

"The site is extremely user-friendly and our IT professional-members really like the design,” said Ms. Walker. "AITP is all about bringing IT professionals together and giving them the opportunity to show off what they can do and who they are. We are thrilled that Celerity worked on this redesign project for us and achieved such positive results.”

With an active community of more than 800 IT professionals, AITP is doing revolutionary things in the Richmond market to serve the growing community of IT professionals and technologists. The Richmond chapter hosts monthly forums to discuss technology trends, facilitate knowledge and idea sharing, and encourage networking. AITP also hosts events, meetings, and distributes news and information on hot technology topics.

"We are excited to be partnering with AITP,” said Todd Florence, VP of Celerity's Central Virginia Operations. "This collaboration has allowed us to develop a deeper connection within the Richmond IT community while working with some talented leaders at AITP.”

About Celerity
Celerity is a business acceleration consultancy devoted to helping companies and government agencies break through key stuck points and solve critical problems. They deliver proven solutions in four main areas: technology adoption and integration, business process efficiency, strategy and alignment and talent. This year, topics of discussion included attracting and retaining key employees, overseeing outsourced/cloud services, managing BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), and integrating social network services. The forum consisted of a panel of regional senior-level IT executives from various industries such as pharmaceuticals, finance/banking and manufacturing. The audience attended our meeting were professionals, students and faculty.

We sent out invitations and received 50 responses. However, at the meeting we ended up with 62 attendees with half comprised of students from the local colleges. As with our first CIO forum last year, this meeting was a great success. The success was due to the partnership with Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC.edu) and other local colleges, the commitment from our panel of experts, the dedication of student chapter advisers, and the participation from our board and members.
In Memoriam: Sheboygan's Eugene (Gene) Schnelle

Eugene (Gene) Schnelle, 83 of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin passed away on January 11, 2012. Gene spent 43 years at Plastics Engineering Company, Sheboygan, Wisconsin planning, implementing, and then directing the automation of the organization from card key systems to their current digital global network environment. Growing up in nearby Kiel, Wisconsin he completed his education and his military commitment to country prior to starting at Plenco in 1952. During his working life he devoted his time to his 6 children and their activities, the St. Dominic Catholic Church (he used his automation skills for the church during his working life and in retirement as well), and the Data Processing Management Association as a Charter Member (1964) of the Sheboygan Chapter 207.

Gene held every DPMA office during his tenure and held the gavel as our President in 1973. You could not find a more willing worker and he founded our June Dinner Dance and assisted in organizing our Annual Golf Outing (40th annual is coming up in 2012) with fellow Charter Member Cliff Van Ess (Superior Supply) and the late Doug Doebert (Richardson Industries). Until health issues hindered his participation two years ago he had attended every event.

Cliff Van Ess at 88 has made every meeting and has just come out of retirement again to use his programming skills for Superior Supply per the request of the company president. Cliff was the subject of a great Information Executive article recently done by Larry Schmitz (Region V President) http://www.aitp.org/news/68781/An-Incredible-Story-About-An-Incredible-Man.htm.

The Sheboygan Chapter AITP will miss Gene but never forget his contributions.

In regards to the twenty five additional 1964 Charter Members on the list with Gene it is interesting to note some of their accomplishments as listed below;

Terry Kohler – Terry's father was the Governor of Wisconsin from 1951-1957 (Walter J. Kohler Jr.). Terry owns Windway Corporation that includes the Vollrath Company and North Sales Inc. both located in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Terry is an avid sailor and competes in the World Cup annually.

Terry's cousin is Herbert V. Kohler Jr. the Chairman of the Kohler Company. Terry was the Data Processing Manager at Vollrath Company during his time in DPMA and an early proponent in building the companies own proprietary "ERP” software solutions.

Stuart Warrington – Stu during his DPMA time was the Data Processing Manager of Heritage Mutual Insurance Company (now known as Acuity) and chartered their subsidiary called Heritage Computer Corporation (HCC) in 1969 to sell insurance software nationally. Chartering a software company in 1969 was extremely insightful and HCC was one of the top 2 national providers of insurance software for 25 years. In addition he went on to form his own company called Strategic Data Systems in the mid 1980's that was on INC Magazines fastest growing list annually.

Bill Smudde – Bill was the Data Processing Manager for Armour Leather (later known as Armira) during his DPMA activity. Bill went on to partner with Dave Marshall to form DASD Corporation in Milwaukee, Wisconsin which was the state's first "service bureau processor”; they leveraged a contract from Miller Brewing Company at the time to "outsource” some of their data processing requirements.

How about that, in the early 1960's DPMA members in Sheboygan were moving towards chartering software companies, building ERP systems, and offering outsourcing. The charter class of 1964 was a real good one.

In Memoriam: Vern Reed

The Akron Canton chapter lost its last charter member on November 2, 2011 with the passing of Vern Reed. An accountant at Goodyear Tire & Rubber, Vern found his interests mirrored in the newly formed National Machine Accountants Association (predecessor to DPMA and AITP) which he joined in 1956. A mere six years later, he was elected chapter president. Working his way up the organizational ranks, Vern eventually became an International Director and in 1986 was awarded lifetime Emeritus membership for his many years of service.

A WW II verteran, Vern is remembered for his military bearing and his intrepid spirit - qualities that no doubt factored into his achieving the rank of Master Sergeant for his service in the Pacific and European theaters. Fellow International Director Russ Moore remembers encountering Vern at a skydiving demonstration at the local airport. Confessing his own cowardice, Russ found his sentiments at odds with Vern's. It turned out that Vern's son was one of the jumpers and, Russ suspects, could have easily convinced his dad to enthusiastically join him in the activity.

An important part of the Reed family legacy, DPMA (now AITP) was also the organization of choice for Vern's brother, Melvin, who predeceased him. Vern's lifetime involvement in DPMA is prominantly noted in the following obituary from the November 3, 2011 Akron Beacon Journal.
Vern Reed

Vern Reed, 88, of Akron, passed away Wednesday, November 2, 2011.

He was born in Akron to the late Victor and Theresa Reed, and lived here all of his life. He was a lifetime member of St. Vincent's Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Melvin, and wife Joanne Sullivan Reed.

Vern was a graduate of St. Vincent's High School and retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber in 1985 after 43 years of service. During his wartime service, he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant. Vern was a very active member of the Data Processing Management Association, serving in many capacities, achieving the Office of International Director. He enjoyed golf and bowling.

He is survived by sons, Thomas (Rose) of Merrimack, N.H., Paul (June) of Florida, George (Irina) of Columbus, Ohio; daughter, Janis (Richard) Goings of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; granddaughter, Lauren (Vic) Reed Smart of Merrimack, N.H.; grandson, Alexander Reed of Columbus, Ohio; and great-grandson, Jacoby Reed of Merrimack, N.H. Vern is also survived by numerous relatives.

The family would like to thank the staff of Rockynol for their care and support.

Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011 at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent's Catholic Church, where friends may call from 9 until service time.
Chicago 2011 CIO of the Year Award Winner Update

On October 26th at the Executives Club of Chicago preceding the "High Tech Conference” the 2011 CIO of the Year award was presented to Mr. Stewart H. McCutcheon Chief Information & Productivity Officer at Nalco Corporation by co-sponsors Executives Club of Chicago, Society of Information Management (SIM) and the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP).

Stewart H. McCutcheon Chief Information & Productivity Officer at Nalco

Since 1995 the top CIO's in the Chicagoland area have been recognized by being nominated by their peers and CEOs for the annual CIO of the Year award. Just to be recognized and nominated by other industry leaders is a great honor. The award was established to publicly recognize the increasingly important role of the CIO in value realization and the delivery of exceptional ROI, as well as the significance that technology plays in Midwestern companies and our economy. The award was presented and recognized the CIO of the Year winner for his accomplishments in front of an audience of over 500 executives on October 26th at the beginning of The Executives Club of Chicago High Tech Conference preceding the CEO luncheon.

The nomination process starts in early June each year and 20+ top CIOs are nominated by their CIO peers and company CEO's. Those nominated prepare an in depth write-up on themselves covering 12 key category areas. Each of the CIO category answers are individually judged by 10 of their peers and given a score from 1 to 10 for each category. This year the CIOs were judged on the following categories: Role in the Business; Career Background; Leadership in Driving the Business; Leadership in Company Success in the Global Economy; Innovation/Contribution to the Company's Competitiveness; Leadership in Corporate Social Responsibility; Actions Taken and Accomplishments in Building Business Partners; Vision (Long & Short term) - Thoroughness and Practicality of Vision; Relevance to the Business; Contribution to External Customers; Organizational Effectiveness; External Recognition (Awards); and Community and Professional Contributions.

Please congratulate Mr. Stewart McCutcheon on being chosen by his peers to be the top CIO and be recognized by his peers as the2011 CIO of the Year.

The Chicago CIO of the Year competition is an excellent example of how the Chicago Chapter has increased its visibility and stature through collaboration or alliance activities. The award was founded by Rich Barnier (Chicago Chapter President for many years) and was first awarded in 1995. While the Chicago Chapter and Rich have been the driving force behind the award, it has been co-branded with the Executives Club of Chicago since 2004 and with SIM since 2011. SIM Chicago is one of the largest SIM chapters. Celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2011, the Executives Club of Chicago is one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious business organizations. This co-branding strategy is a key element of Chicago Chapter's marketing to the Chicago business and IT community.

In Memoriam: Walter "Walt" Harnack

Lifetime member and beloved educator Walt Harnack passed away on July 18, 2011. Walt was an inspirational teacher for 30 years at Akron's Garfield High School as well as a student advisor for the University of Akron. Fellow lifetime member Barbara Shaver met Walt in his latter role and credits him for helping her attain a 4 year degree by capitalizing on her previous coursework. She remembers his mentorship continuing after graduation as he encouraged her to share her thoughts on the importance of education with his high school students whose thank you letters she still cherishes.

A giving person, Walt served his community, his country (Korean conflict), and DPMA (predecessor to AITP) in a variety of positions including chapter President in 1988. An obituary from the Canton Repository listing Walt's many accomplishments follows:

Walter "Walt" Harnack
82, went home to be with the Lord on July 18, 2011 at St. Luke Lutheran Community.
