AITP: Information Executive Newsletter Article

Mr. Alexander Dryden Stokes, a graduating senior from Columbine High School, is honored by the Mile High Chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) as the 2010 recipient of the Dave Sanders Columbine Information Technology Scholarship at the chapter's monthly dinner meeting on May 20th, 2010. Alexander will use the $1000 scholarship for tuition to attend the University of Colorado Denver in the fall where he intends to study Computer Science.

In his classes at Columbine Alexander has received an outstanding student achievement award for his 3.0 grade average and received the "Stretch for Excellence" award in both AP Physics and AP Calculus. Alexander has also participated in community service programs, computer club and served as editor for the 2009 Yearbook.

Alexander has a passion for working with information technology: he is currently working with WordPress, and AJAX applications and recently redesigned the front page for the GetSomeSports.com website. During summer break of his sophomore and Junior years Alexander worked at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) on documentation of computer assets, equipment troubleshooting and consolidation of Excel Spreadsheet data. His personal goal is to become internet application designer and to develop a more intelligent version of search engine technology available today.

Scholarship Committee Chair, Larry Krupicka, says that Alexander was highly recommended by his guidance counselor Ms. Lee Paternoster who noted: "All of his teachers describe Alexander as bright, engaging and as an enthusiastic learner. He participates in and leads class discussion and always comes to class with something to contribute. He is also very teachable, eager to improve, and seeks out help. He is willing to work hard to understand or get better at things. They all say that he is well liked by his classmates because he is always willing to help them. All of his teachers say that they rely on him to provide assistance with their computers or other technology they may be using because he is so skilled in this area. His Calculus teacher remarked that Alexander always finds a way to integrate technology into the classroom. In fact, he uses technology as a discovery tool to enhance his own learning."

Outside his class and work schedule, Alexander enjoys Cycling, Hiking and going to movie theaters with his friends.

This scholarship was funded to honor the memory of Dave Sanders, who was a computer lab and business instructor at Columbine High School in Littleton Colorado until April 20, 1999 when he lost his life helping students to safety during the Columbine shootings.

AITP is a national organization that provides quality IT related education, information on relevant IT issues and forums for networking with experienced peers and other IT professionals. The Mile High Chapter has been providing leadership opportunities, professional development and personal growth in Denver for 58 years.
