Mert Walker Award

This award is presented to the member (non-director) who contributes the most to the success of the Twin City AITP chapter for the year.

Merton R. Walker was one of the founders and the second president of the Twin City AITP (DPMA) Chapter.  An Assistant Vice President of Data Processing at State Farm Insurance, Mert was a long time and energetic advocate of both professional certification and the value of professional associations.  He helped form the Data Processing Management Association’s (DPMA’s) Certificate of Data Processing (CDP) and achieved his CDP in 1962.  He went on to serve on the Board of Directors for the Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals ( who now administers the CDP exam.  He was ICCP president in 1979-81 and served on the  Board of Directors of the ICCP Education Foundation.
Mert continued his active involvement in DPMA by going on to serve at the regional and international levels.  He was Region 5 President (at that time called "Division Chair”) in 1971.  Mert went on to serve as a DPMA International Vice President in the early 1970s. 
Mert Walker was a strong advocate for DPMA /AITP and backed his advocacy with extensive participation at all levels.  It is in his honor that the Twin City Chapter presents the Mert Walker Award.
