Trends Driving the Changing Corporate IT Department

Many corporate IT departments are undergoing changes. Corporate Executive Board (CEB) found that 92% of CIOS have either recently reorganized their IT departments or plan to do so.

CEB's information technology practice recently identified several trends that are driving changes in corporate IT departments. Some of these changes will require CIOs to recruit new IT staff with a new set of skills.

Focus on process automation is waning, with a shift toward managing and analyzing information. In 2011, CEB saw budgets for new for information management projects surpass budgets for process automation projects. That trend appears to be gaining momentum in 2012. The implications of this information-over-process shift mean that CIOs will need to be on the lookout for more information architects and service mangers to package information and analytics as a service. Also in demand is what CEB labels as "information insight enablers," those who will help information users find meaning in the data.

In addition, as business unit leaders (heads of marketing, HR, sales, operations, etc.) gain more control and ownership of the technology they need and use, corporate IT department's function changes as IT is being bypassed. Business units need less assistance and help from corporate IT. Additionally, this independence is also being cultivated by vendors to the business units so they can bypass corporate IT during the sales process.

IT's new role will be to counsel and educate different business units and ensure the unit's technology can be integrated into the bigger corporate IT structure and organization and overall company goals.
