George Schaefer, DPMA Mile High Chapter President 1965-1966
By Suzanne I. Weston, Chair, AITP Mile High Chapter Harold M. Pool Recognition Award
It is with sorrow that I report that George Schaefer, CDP, of Littleton, Colorado, passed away at age 86 on December 25, 2010. A memorial service will be held in the spring.
George was an active member for over forty years of the Denver Mile High Chapter of the Data Processing Management Association (DPMA), now known as the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP). He served as the Chapter's 1965-1966 President, and most recently on the Harold M. Pool Memorial Scholarship committee from its inception in June 2001, until December 2009. After he retired, he continued to attend Chapter meetings, and almost always the annual Chapter Past Presidents and awards dinner meeting. Below is a picture taken at the May 2007 dinner meeting.
George was born in Sterling, Colorado, on September 30, 1924. He met and married Anne Rodeck while at the University of Colorado, Boulder, 63 years ago. They lived in Littleton for 53 years. George is survived by his wife and two children, Larry Schaefer and Terry Schaefer Steinborn.
He was in the U.S. Army Air Corps for three years, and graduated from CU in 1949 with a B.S. in Accounting. He spent the majority of his working life as a Systems Analyst and Programmer, predominately for oil companies, and became head of the Midwest Oil data processing department. He spent his last few years as a part-time Business Appraiser, specializing in computers, and continued to work part-time until he was in his mid-70s.
George loved western history, and was actively involved with the Denver Westerners and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.
The last 25+ years he and Anne traveled extensively, visiting all of the western part of the U.S. and six continents. Anne said that George wasn't interested in the "cold" Antarctic. They almost always camped out, but ten years ago bought a small motor home.

George was always a well-dressed, soft spoken gentleman, and it was my pleasure and honor to have known and worked with him on Chapter activities for almost 20 years.
